It is said that it takes a local, to design for local. Armed with this understanding, Fortis partnered with Richmond-based SJB Architects to create Richmond Square.
Drawing on the character of Richmond’s surrounding laneways and vibrant culture, this new precinct brings to the suburb a compelling blend of extraordinary culinary and wellbeing experiences. Dive into an inspired indoor/outdoor setting.
Richmond Square breathes new life into the interconnected laneways behind Swan Street. Such a precinct demanded meticulous architectural attention to the ground floor plane, where every detail has been crafted to create a seamless fusion of functionality and striking aesthetics. This masterful design not only enhances accessibility but also transforms communal spaces into vibrant hubs of activity and connection. With retail and hospitality effortlessly integrated alongside a dynamic mix of residential and workplace environments, Richmond Square pulsates with energy day and night. Tristan Wong, Director at SJB Architects, sees Richmond Square as a masterpiece woven into Richmond’s vibrant fabric. “We aimed to create homes that seamlessly complement Richmond’s lively spirit,” Wong explains. Drawing inspiration from the graceful Victorian architecture lining Swan Street, Richmond Square intertwines modern design with historical charm.
Richmond’s architectural legacy is at the heart of Richmond Square’s design philosophy. By reinterpreting Victorian shopfronts and pub facades, incorporating elements like green bricks and robust red brick, the project sparks a dialogue between past and present. “Our goal was to integrate these heritage elements into Richmond Square, forging a timeless connection with its surroundings”. Nestled away from bustling streets, Richmond Square beckons exploration, echoing the allure of Melbourne’s hidden laneways that the city is so well known for. This intentional placement fosters a distinctive local identity and charm, while resonating with Richmond’s unique essence. The vision is to establish a space that feels deeply rooted, poised to evolve gracefully into a cherished piece of tomorrow’s heritage.
